John Isner Falls In 5 Sets

Reported by SB Nation

John Isner had to wait through a lengthy rain delay before even taking the court Sunday night at Arthur Ashe Stadium for his match with Philipp Kohlschreiber. But his eventual five-set defeat probably magnified the pain of the wait.

The No. 19 seed German won a tight first set, 6-4, by winning the only break point he had. Isner was sharper in the second set, winning 6-3 in just 37 minutes and collecting five aces.

In set three, Isner was able to break Kohlschreiber in the decisive game to win 6-4, converting the last of three break points to go up two sets to one.

But Kohlschreiber battled back for a 6-3 win in the fourth set, and endured a 55-minute final set that ended 6-4 in his favor to move on to the round of 16, his third appearance in the round of 16 in a Grand Slam event in 2012.
